Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24, 72 from Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise when she was just a young girl. She was an evening nurse in order to give her mother the time she needed throughout the day to indulge in the passion of art, literature, and theatre. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's examples of how art could serve as an instrument for activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially conscious and taught that she could express her thoughts through art. DuVernay was raised in Compton with her parents however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has been for generations. DuVernay's Dad recalled seeing the Civil Rights Movement's historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was strongly influenced by the summers she spent in Selma to later direct the documentary of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a high school diploma in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she received qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. When she was a student DuVernay became interested in producing for broadcast journalism. She began her career as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the watch and search the home for a specific juror. Her tasks to complete left her unhappy which is why, when she decided not to continue in the field of journalism, she was able to move into the industry of publicity. DuVernay was offered a job straight from college, working as a new publicist at a studio. She was promoted to the position and set up her own company for public relations named The DuVernay Agency in 1999.
